The sun has set on an amazing week in for Team Tasmania and a small number of our club members. In summary our junior athletes finished as follows:Sam Lindsay U17 5000m Walk 2nd 22:24.99Annabelle Cook U16 Heptathlon 3rd and a member of the 4x400m relay new Tasmanian recordCammi Thomas U15 jumped consistently, slightly short of her PBs with 7th place in high jump (1.55m), and 8th in TJ (10.85) and LJ (5.06m).Alex Ling U17 hurdled well, narrowly missing out on a berth in the finals of both the 400m (59.74) and 110m (16.23) hurdles.Lily Smith jumped a personal best of 5.31m to place in the top 8 in the U17 long jump, and had an amazing Heptathlon except for a DQ in the 200m for a foot on line infringement, which dashed her Heptathlon PB score plans. She valiantly continued to the end of her 7 events placing 10th with 3385 points.Koby Hovington completed 4 of his U18 Decathlon events, with a PB in the long jump and almost equal best in the shot put. He managed 1.58m in the high jump before exacerbating his patella tendonitis. He was unable to warm up for the 400m without limping, and decided to withdraw from further competition. Furthering the Decathlon woes, Avery Thomas U18 Decathlon, sustained a grade 3 turf toe injury a week prior to competition. He ran the 100m in 11.51sec to place 3rd in the first event, but 50m into the race, despite a well splinted toe, the injury flared up, and he also made the heart wrenching decision to withdraw from competition. WELCOME TO NEWSTEAD ATHLETICS

Newstead Athletics was established in 1933 in Launceston, making it the oldest club in the north and the second-oldest athletic club in Tasmania.

The club conducts its cross-country programme between April and September around the Launceston area and participates in the local track and field competition at the St Leonards track from October to March.

Coaching is available for all events, and potential athletes of all ages, regardless of experience and ability, are welcome to come along to training or competition.

CALENDAR

at a glance

TRACK AND FIELD

From October to March our club competes in the Northern Athletics Interclub competition, culminating with competition in the Tasmanian state titles in Feb/March.

SCHOOLS CROSS-COUNTRY PROGRAM

Newstead Athletics runs a very successful School Series Competition each year as part of our cross-country program. Students represent their school in a fun team-based running program.

CROSS-COUNTRY

A cross-country season is conducted during the winter months on Saturdays from 1pm (April to September) at venues in and around Launceston. We cater for all ages from 5 years to 100+ and are an inclusive club. Three distances are offered each week and all races are handicapped, providing everyone a chance of winning regardless of ability.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Newstead Athletics scholarships are available twice a year due to a generous bequest from Life Member Mr Allen Patrick Smith (aka ‘Paddy Smith”) who passed away in 2008 and the ongoing efforts of the current committee.

VISUAL IDENTITY

Newstead Athletics is presenting its new visual identity, which includes a new club crest, website, stationery, and uniform.

The memorable yellow and black combination now colours a sophisticated and contemporary design that represents our past, present, and future.

Competition top

The current uniform will be phased out in 2024; until then, athletes can compete wearing either the old or new uniform.
